VHS is to blame.
During the 1980s this young teenager from Nottingham spent far too much time filming goofy videos with his friends on the family VHS camcorder. Meanwhile, his family were never able to record or watch their favourite TV programmes as the living room was turned into an edit suite - VHS tape recorder crudely wired up to the camcorder, with mumbles of frustration when the "edit" didn't work. 11 GCSEs, A levels in Maths, Physics and Electronics and an HND in Media Production didn't change the fact that, back then, TV Production equipment was still extremely expensive. There was no other alternative - to get access to the equipment he'd have to get a job in the film and TV industry.
Simon Kotowicz started working in film and television post-production in 1994. He rapidly worked his way up to become an online editor, motion graphics designer and colourist, working freelance in London’s Soho. Along the way, Kotowicz used editing, visual effects and colour grading systems from all the major manufacturers; including Lightworks, Quantel, Avid, Autodesk, Discreet, Softimage, Apple and Adobe. This hands-on access to a broad spectrum has led to Kotowicz’s encyclopaedic knowledge and trusted reputation.
In 2007 Kotowicz started his own professional stills photography business, running in tandem with his work in television. This led into Directing educational programmes for a small broadcaster and eventually becoming a Director of Photography for various independent production companies.
Kotowicz is known for his attention to detail, his vast technical expertise and his enthusiasm to streamline the workflow.
In his spare time he enjoys reading instruction manuals!
